Story from WYTV:
“An explosion possibly involving methane gas has been reported at the Struthers Sewage Plant on Lowellville Road.
An employee says two workers were badly burned in the incident, which happened at about 2:30 p.m. They were taken by medical helicopter to Pittsburgh hospitals, but their names and conditions haven’t yet been released.
Ambulances, medical helicopters and mutual aid were called to the scene. Parts of Lowellville Road and area streets were blocked off for safety reasons because gas was still in the area. Those roads have since been reopened.”
The Struthers Water Pollution Control Facility treats 4.5 million gallons of waste water and removes 500 tons of solid waste from the waste water flow every day.
Stay posted for updates on the cause of the explosion as additional details become public.
